Figure depicting a Set Top BoxWell, all the hype and promises of the soon-to-be updated FiOS TV Interactive Media Guide (IMG) is over... well, almost.

I came home from work today and noticed my DVR STB was displaying 8888 on the LCD display.  I didn't think much of it -- even when the wife was complaining that the TV didn't work.  Later that night, I turned on the upstairs STB and immediately noticed the IMG was new.  Hooray!

Of course, since the wife assertively took control of the TV to watch DIY channel, I decided I'd go back downstairs.  Of course, the DVR STB was constantly resetting itself and recycling.

After about 30 minutes of turning the thing off/on and trying to do anything to get it to stay on longer than 1-sec...  I tried the online help.  That was like having a root canal all over again.  After 15 minutes of no success in FiOS automation assistant (aka Borg) sending commands to reset my box, I finally told the recording to get a live support rep on the phone.

Another 30 or so minutes went by when the Tech finally told me that he will have to dispatch a Tech out with a replacement box.  Evidently, I won the lottery as my box is one in many that seem to be having a problem with firmware updates.  Go figure.

I swear, if it wasn't for bad luck, I'd never have any luck.

It would seem that I must be one of the fortunate few that finds almost every bug in any device or piece of software I touch.

Now the bad news:

1) I have to tell the wife she has now lost all her DVR recordings!  We have had FiOS for about 4 months now and have been slowly building up our DVR selection.  No brownie points for me here for a while.

2) FiOS can only dispatch a technician to my house between a certain 4 hour window.   What the heck.  Since us normal folks work 8-5PM, my only option is to schedule someone to drop by on Saturday.  Today is Tuesday!

Now I have to take a half-day from work so I can sit at home for 3 hours and 45 minutes for the guy to show up at the last minute.  Go figure again.

Wish me luck --
